2012 National Brahman Show dedicated to Shirley Watts

The American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) dedicated the 2012 National Brahman Show to Shirley Watts of Tic Tac Toe Ranch in Frost, Texas on October 17, 2012 during the National Brahman Female Show. The show took place over a two day period in conjunction with the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

Since 1985, the ABBA has dedicated its National or International Show to deserving individuals. Having participated in the National Brahman Show for 60 plus years, Watts is an icon in the Brahman show ring. Watts, her late husband Max and three daughters Stephanie, Debra and Tammie, have been familiar faces to the Brahman world for years.

Watts is also a renowned judge, having traveled both domestically and internationally to evaluate Brahman cattle. Perhaps most notably, she was the first woman to judge the International Brahman Show in 1998.

“Shirley Watts is most deserving of this honor due to her longtime service and promotion of the Brahman breed,” said ABBA executive vice president, Chris Shivers. “Not only has she excelled in the showring, but she understands the commercial industry.”

Watts currently serves a leadership position with the ABBA, as a member of the Board of Directors, and is considered an asset to all levels of the organization. Her participation in the ABBA, her dedication to the breed, and her passion for Brahman cattle has earned her an esteemed standing with fellow breeders.

“To be respected by your peers is one of the greatest honors you can have,” said fellow long-time Brahman breeder, Jim Williams, V8 Ranch, of Watts during the dedication presentation. “… she has that wonderful respect.”

The ABBA is proud to dedicate the 2012 National Brahman Show to Shirley Watts.

Brahman shipment to Philippines in the works

After several years of discussion and planning, a shipment of registered Brahmans to the Philippines looks to be coming reality. We appreciate the continued work of the ABBA leadership, Billy Badilla and the Philippine government and look forward to the continued relationship.

This shipment will consist of 1,000 Registered Brahman Females and 19 Bulls. The price that will be paid will be $1,700 for the females and $3,000 for the bulls. The females must be 9 -18 months of age as of November 15, 2012. Bulls must be breeding age and must have already passed a Breeding Soundness Exam by November 15, 2012. The purchase price ($1,700) will be the payment to the producer for the delivery of a tested animal to a centralized location. Breeders should factor in what the health tests cost, transportation costs and the cost of maintaining the animals until they are shipped (30-45 days). Please understand that 1,000 heifers and 19 bulls that have been tested and meet the requirements of the Selection Committee must be obtained or this shipment will not take place. It is most important that you commit animals that you are positive that you will sell.

The selection team is scheduled to arrive around the end of November and the cattle are to be shipped by January 1, 2013. Once the available cattle are compiled through the questionnaire responses, the ABBA will coordinate centralized locations to view the cattle and notify you when they will be in your area.

If you have additional questions about this feel free to contact the ABBA Office at 713-349-0854. The ABBA looks forward to the opportunity to facilitate this project and uniting breeders from both countries. The deadline to return the questionnaire is November 1, 2012. Following this, the ABBA will be in touch with the breeders who want to be involved with additional information.

ABBA Membership Convention slated for November

The American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) is currently planning its 2nd Annual Convention to be held November 16 and 17 at Moody Gardens Hotel and Spa in Galveston, Texas. The ABBA Convention is a beef industry focused event, open to both ABBA members and non-member cattlemen who have an interest in Brahman genetics. It will provide workshops and seminars for all ages and experience levels.

The ABBA is excited to announce its convention’s highlighted seminar: Ranching for Profit. Dave Pratt, a nationally recognized lecturer with Ranch Management Consultants, will help attendees find ranching breakthroughs to increase profit, improve the health of the land, improve business relationships and increase overall ranching satisfaction.

Seminars on effective record keeping, online registry capabilities, challenges facing beef producers, understanding the end product, the ABBA F-1 Program, and adding value to cattle will also accompany the Ranching for Profit workshop.

As a bonus, those who attend sessions will receive one general Continuing Education Unit (CEU). Particular sessions will also provide participants with CEUs for the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program.

For the first time, breakout sessions will be provided for youth. These will feature information on the American Junior Brahman Association (AJBA), a leadership workshop, as well as an ag advocacy seminar presented by Texas A&M University’s Farmer’s Fight group. Included in the youth program is an opportunity for juniors to explore Moody Gardens Amusement Park.

For those interested in attending the 2013 ABBA Convention, preregistration is available until October 18 at a rate of $50, after which the price will increase to $100. Those who preregister will be entered to win a free two night stay at Moody Gardens Hotel and Spa during the event.

Brahman genetics provide relief for drought-stricken herds

Two summers of dire drought conditions in a vast majority of the U.S. has made drought relief a hot topic among the nation’s cattlemen. The importance of selecting cattle that fit the environment is more apparent now than ever before, especially considering the extremely hot and dry conditions, limited forage and high feed prices that have driven cattlemen to disperse their herds. Yet, even with the undesirable weather pattern, herd dispersal can be avoided. In fact, it has been avoided. Brahman and Brahman F-1 breeders have taken advantage of the American Brahman’s drought tolerance to keep their business afloat.

Nationwide, the value of “eared” genetics, especially in cow herds, is taking on a whole new meaning. As the No. 1 beef breed for heat tolerance, efficiency and hybrid vigor, American Brahman genetics are proven to increase drought resistance in their progeny. Brahman F-1s are even more adaptable, heat resistant and efficient than their non-Brahman parent.

That is why Frank Reznicek, manager of the 100-year-old Kachele Ranch, has been a long time user of Brahman F-1 cows. Ranching in the rice country of Wallis, Texas, he’s no stranger to running cattle on compromised land with limited forage. He says that Brahman F-1s always adapt.

“I use the F-1 cow because she is a survivor,” said Reznicek. “That cow can withstand weather and insect problems and live on anything.”

And although her survivability and adaptability are especially important to cattlemen who are enduring the current drought conditions, it’s the Brahman F-1’s bred-in efficiency that puts money back in the rancher’s pocket, even in a troubled climate. The Brahman F-1 is known to utilize minimal forage and still wean heavy calves year in and year out. She’s also a leader in longevity in the beef cattle realm.

Texas cattleman Jim McCord of JM Ranches in Gause, Texas, has been running Brahman F-1s for more than 25 years for just those reasons.

“It is our goal to wean off calves that weigh 50 percent of their mother’s weight,” McCord said. “We have no trouble doing that on our Brahman F-1 cows … [and they] stay in production usually up through 15 or 16 years old.”

McCord’s program, goals and use of the Brahman F-1 equates to higher lifetime cow productivity and consequently more profit for JM Ranches. That extra profit from putting the Brahman F-1 female to work is available to all ranchers, regardless of conditions beyond their control. And now is the time to utilize it.

Cattlemen need to consider restocking with genetics that will ensure they won’t suffer the same drought-caused losses in the future. Those who restock with genetics from adaptable, long-lasting and efficient high quality cattle will come out ahead. Infusing the herd with Brahman blood is the key to turning a profit when drought becomes standard.

More than 150 youth participate in All American National Junior Brahman Show

On July 23-28, the American Junior Brahman Association (AJBA) held the 33rd Annual “All American” National Junior Brahman show at the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center in Shawnee, Oklahoma. More than 150 exhibitors from seven states brought Brahman bulls and females to compete in owned and bred and owned cattle divisions as well as to participate in a variety of leadership contests. This event was hosted by the Oklahoma Junior Brahman Association, which did an exceptional job in making this event a success.

Judge Brett Barber of Dumas, Texas sorted through more than 450 head of Brahmans July 27 and 78. He selected Adrian Land II of Branford, Florida for top honors in the owned bull classes, winning Grand Champion Grey Brahman Bull with his entry, JDH Mr. Manso 638. His counterpart, the Grand Champion Red Brahman Bull was M’Lee Ivy’s entry, Mr. H Hampton Rojo 201/1, which traveled to compete in Shawnee from Soso, Mississippi.

The female show was just as impressive, with Austin Gonzalez’s Miss V8 474/7 “Legacy”  earning the honor of Grand Champion Grey Brahman Female. The Grand Champion Red Brahman Female, Lady H Flavia Manso 179/0 was exhibited by Amie Ferguson of Roanoke, Louisiana.

A unique aspect of the American Junior Brahman Association’s (AJBA) National Junior Show is the opportunity for youth to breed, raise and show their own cattle. Judged by Paul Maulsby of College Station, Texas, the Bred and Owned division of this annual show is one of the most coveted honors.

Awarded Grand Champion Grey Bred and Owned Bull was Jacob Vallenta’s JMV Leroy Manso 52/1 from Alleyton, Texas. Bar L Red Solo 70 owned by Allie Carriere of Port Barre, Louisiana acquired the title of Grand Champion Red Bred and Owned Bull. Bred and Owned female champions were Miss CBR Viva 491/0 owned by Haley Herzog of Robinson, Texas from the grey division and Miss Double A 695/0 owned by Evan Acevedo of Mission, Texas in the red division.

This all-around youth competition not only gives junior members the opportunity to raise and show cattle, but it also allows them to demonstrate their skills in other realms to acquire points towards the top honor of All Around Individual. Included in these events are a showmanship contest, public speaking contest, poster and photography contests and a herdsman quiz. Nine-year-old Savannah Allen of Sulphur Springs, Texas took home this year’s top honor of All Around Individual, garnering points in the cattle show as well as each of the other leadership contests.

In conjunction with the other activities the AJBA also holds its Annual Membership Meeting conducting the business of the organization and electing the leadership for the coming year. Andrew Simon of Baton Rouge, Louisiana was selected to lead the AJBA for the coming year with Haley Herzog of Robinson, Texas being named the Vice President, Arica Land of Branford, Florida elected as secretary, Jessica Smith of Maringouin, Lousiana named treasurer and Jacob Valenta of Alleyton, Texas to hold the position of AJBA reporter.

See the Juniors section at brahman.org for photos of the champions. A complete listing of winners is available on the blog below.
