2012 National Brahman Show dedicated to Shirley Watts

The American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) dedicated the 2012 National Brahman Show to Shirley Watts of Tic Tac Toe Ranch in Frost, Texas on October 17, 2012 during the National Brahman Female Show. The show took place over a two day period in conjunction with the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

Since 1985, the ABBA has dedicated its National or International Show to deserving individuals. Having participated in the National Brahman Show for 60 plus years, Watts is an icon in the Brahman show ring. Watts, her late husband Max and three daughters Stephanie, Debra and Tammie, have been familiar faces to the Brahman world for years.

Watts is also a renowned judge, having traveled both domestically and internationally to evaluate Brahman cattle. Perhaps most notably, she was the first woman to judge the International Brahman Show in 1998.

“Shirley Watts is most deserving of this honor due to her longtime service and promotion of the Brahman breed,” said ABBA executive vice president, Chris Shivers. “Not only has she excelled in the showring, but she understands the commercial industry.”

Watts currently serves a leadership position with the ABBA, as a member of the Board of Directors, and is considered an asset to all levels of the organization. Her participation in the ABBA, her dedication to the breed, and her passion for Brahman cattle has earned her an esteemed standing with fellow breeders.

“To be respected by your peers is one of the greatest honors you can have,” said fellow long-time Brahman breeder, Jim Williams, V8 Ranch, of Watts during the dedication presentation. “… she has that wonderful respect.”

The ABBA is proud to dedicate the 2012 National Brahman Show to Shirley Watts.

Brahman shipment to Philippines in the works

After several years of discussion and planning, a shipment of registered Brahmans to the Philippines looks to be coming reality. We appreciate the continued work of the ABBA leadership, Billy Badilla and the Philippine government and look forward to the continued relationship.

This shipment will consist of 1,000 Registered Brahman Females and 19 Bulls. The price that will be paid will be $1,700 for the females and $3,000 for the bulls. The females must be 9 -18 months of age as of November 15, 2012. Bulls must be breeding age and must have already passed a Breeding Soundness Exam by November 15, 2012. The purchase price ($1,700) will be the payment to the producer for the delivery of a tested animal to a centralized location. Breeders should factor in what the health tests cost, transportation costs and the cost of maintaining the animals until they are shipped (30-45 days). Please understand that 1,000 heifers and 19 bulls that have been tested and meet the requirements of the Selection Committee must be obtained or this shipment will not take place. It is most important that you commit animals that you are positive that you will sell.

The selection team is scheduled to arrive around the end of November and the cattle are to be shipped by January 1, 2013. Once the available cattle are compiled through the questionnaire responses, the ABBA will coordinate centralized locations to view the cattle and notify you when they will be in your area.

If you have additional questions about this feel free to contact the ABBA Office at 713-349-0854. The ABBA looks forward to the opportunity to facilitate this project and uniting breeders from both countries. The deadline to return the questionnaire is November 1, 2012. Following this, the ABBA will be in touch with the breeders who want to be involved with additional information.
