25th National ABBA F-1 and TBA Brahman sale boasts quality, profitabillity

The 25th Annual American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) National F-1 and Texas Brahman Association (TBA) Brahman Sale, held Saturday, March 17 at Caldwell Livestock Commission in Caldwell, Texas boasted exceptional prices as cattlemen across the South work to restock and enhance their herds.  This year’s sale was dedicated to the memory of James A. (Jim) Theeck of Brenham, Texas.
Area cattlemen gathered in Caldwell, Texas on Saturday at 1 p.m. to place their bids on the nation’s most elite Brahman F-1 females. The quality of this sale was highly anticipated; the auction hall was standing room only at the sale’s commencement. This year’s consignments included Golden Certified and Certified F-1 females, the ABBA’s new F-1+ PLUS program females, as well as registered and purebred Brahmans.

Two pens of Certified Brahman x Hereford F-1 pairs tied as the sale’s high selling lots, bringing $3,700 per head to John Malazzo Farms of Caldwell, Texas. John Malazzo Farms had a very successful day, not only consigning the two high-selling lots, but also receiving honors for consigning the sale’s Champion F-1 pairs and Champion F-1 exposed heifers.

Reata Ranch of Bay City, Texas also took home honors for consigning the Champion F-1 open pen.

This sale was considered by many one of the deepest sets of cattle they’d seen this year. In the Golden Certified and Certified division, pairs averaged $3,060.00, breds averaged $2,050.00, exposed averaged $2,125.00 and opens averaged $1,330.00. The F-1+ PLUS division sold only open females, averaging $1,117.05. In the registered Brahman division, pairs averaged $2,420.00, breds averaged $1,991.23, exposed females averaged $1,860.00 and open females averaged $2,260.00. Two pairs of purebred non-registered Brahman females averaged $2,150.00, purebred bred females averaged $1,750.00 and open purebred Brahmans averaged $1,780.00.

The sale followed this spring’s trend of increased prices on ABBA program cattle. Cattlemen have confidence in the environmental adaptability, increased milk production and higher fertility of F-1 females and appreciate the heat and disease resistance that F-1 females have inherited from their Brahman parents, especially after enduring recent drought conditions.

Excitement in the Polled Brahman world

Many Brahman enthusiasts and breeders have taken notice of the success that Polled Brahmans have been accomplishing in the show ring.

LMC Polled Spice, shown under Winston Walters of Brenham, Texas, is a great example. LMC Polled Spice is an LMC LF Polled Ambassador 700/7 daughter that won the San Antonio open show, the Houston junior show and was Reserve Champion at the Brenham, Waco, Dallas and San Antonio Junior Brahman shows. She was also selected as the Reserve Overall American female at the Houston Junior show. She has won consistently under a wide variety of judges, who appreciate her for her moderation, femininity, balance, muscle and eye appeal. She is a great "Ambassador" for all Brahmans, not just Polled.

Brahman breeders and supporters have been very positive with their comments on the quality and competitiveness of today's Polled Brahmans. The American Brahman Breeders Association is excited to see the quality of Polled Brahman continue to improve and we look forward to what the future of Polled Brahman cattle has in store.

Winston with LMC Polled Spice being congratulated by the judge in Houston

ABBA Program Members fare well at Houston Range Bull and Commercial Female Sale

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 45th Annual All Breed Range Bull and Commercial Female Sales held February 29 and March 3 proved lucrative to American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) program members.

ABBA cattle were well represented. Certified and Golden Certified F-1 program members averaged $2,274.07 on their female pens. By division, twelve pens of Certified and Golden Certified F-1 pairs averaged $2,970.83, two bred Certified and Golden Certified F-1 females averaged $1,900 and 13 lots of open Certified and Golden Certified F-1s brought an average of $1,688.46.
Registered Brahmans also fared well; a total of eight pens of open registered females sold for an average of $2,187.50. Seven registered Brahman bulls were auctioned off on the bull side averaging $3,835.71. Brahmans were the highest averaging breed in the bull sale.
The female sale’s high selling lot, which was also the Overall Grand Champion of the female sale, was a set of Golden Certified F-1 Brahman x Hereford pairs that brought $4,000 to consignor Diamond H Cattle Company of Brenham, Texas. The high selling bull, a registered Brahman called Mr. Dubina Rose 42/0 was consigned by Dubina Rose Ranch of Schulenburg, Texas and brought $5,500.
The Houston All Breed Range Bull and Commercial Female Sale results illustrate the profitability of ABBA program cattle. Not only does registering purebred Brahman cattle improve profit margins in the commercial realm, but certifying Brahman F-1 cattle will also bring increased revenue to sellers.

ABBA Launches New Genomically Enhanced Tenderness EPD

The American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) is pleased to launch its new genomically enhanced Tenderness Expected Progeny Difference (EPD). This new EPD combines both actual harvest data and GeneSTAR DNA results to generate the most accurate Tenderness EPD ever offered by the ABBA.

Since 2003, the ABBA has utilized a general Tenderness EPD that was strictly based off of the Warner-Bratzler Shear Force test when used on actual carcasses. Now, GeneSTAR DNA results have been applied to this original test, and have consequently increased the accuracy of the EPD.

This is just one of the many tools that the ABBA uses to help generate revenue for ABBA members and to increase the marketability of the Brahman breed.

2012 International Brahman Show Dedicated to "Bubba" Hudgins

On March 1, the American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) dedicated the 2012 International Brahman Show in Houston to Leslie “Bubba” Hudgins of Hungerford, Texas.
Since 1986, the ABBA has dedicated its National or International Show to a deserving individual. Hudgins attended his first International Brahman Show in 1948 and has owned or shown cattle at all but one Houston Livestock Show since then, producing a number of international champions.

Although the show was dedicated in his honor, Hudgins credits much of his success to the commercial beef industry, and Hudgins’ Brahman work has not just been domestic. He’s traveled the world promoting, evaluating and marketing cattle, and has formed lasting relationship through his experiences.
“It is only fitting that the 2012 International Brahman Show be dedicated to Bubba Hudgins in front of this international audience at this prestigious event,” said ABBA executive vice president, Chris Shivers. “It goes without saying he is deserving of this honor, and today he is able to share it with his many friends.”
The ABBA is proud to dedicate the 2012 International Brahman Show to Bubba Hudgins.
