25th National ABBA F-1 and TBA Brahman sale boasts quality, profitabillity

The 25th Annual American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) National F-1 and Texas Brahman Association (TBA) Brahman Sale, held Saturday, March 17 at Caldwell Livestock Commission in Caldwell, Texas boasted exceptional prices as cattlemen across the South work to restock and enhance their herds.  This year’s sale was dedicated to the memory of James A. (Jim) Theeck of Brenham, Texas.
Area cattlemen gathered in Caldwell, Texas on Saturday at 1 p.m. to place their bids on the nation’s most elite Brahman F-1 females. The quality of this sale was highly anticipated; the auction hall was standing room only at the sale’s commencement. This year’s consignments included Golden Certified and Certified F-1 females, the ABBA’s new F-1+ PLUS program females, as well as registered and purebred Brahmans.

Two pens of Certified Brahman x Hereford F-1 pairs tied as the sale’s high selling lots, bringing $3,700 per head to John Malazzo Farms of Caldwell, Texas. John Malazzo Farms had a very successful day, not only consigning the two high-selling lots, but also receiving honors for consigning the sale’s Champion F-1 pairs and Champion F-1 exposed heifers.

Reata Ranch of Bay City, Texas also took home honors for consigning the Champion F-1 open pen.

This sale was considered by many one of the deepest sets of cattle they’d seen this year. In the Golden Certified and Certified division, pairs averaged $3,060.00, breds averaged $2,050.00, exposed averaged $2,125.00 and opens averaged $1,330.00. The F-1+ PLUS division sold only open females, averaging $1,117.05. In the registered Brahman division, pairs averaged $2,420.00, breds averaged $1,991.23, exposed females averaged $1,860.00 and open females averaged $2,260.00. Two pairs of purebred non-registered Brahman females averaged $2,150.00, purebred bred females averaged $1,750.00 and open purebred Brahmans averaged $1,780.00.

The sale followed this spring’s trend of increased prices on ABBA program cattle. Cattlemen have confidence in the environmental adaptability, increased milk production and higher fertility of F-1 females and appreciate the heat and disease resistance that F-1 females have inherited from their Brahman parents, especially after enduring recent drought conditions.
